at Llandegfedd Lake

Organised Open Water Swimming

We are a hub for health, wellbeing and recreation and recognise the physical and mental benefits of open water swimming.

We are a SAFE Cymru Accredited Venue.

SAFE Cymru (Safe Aquatic Facility Endorsement) is a brand new accreditation designed to support outdoor facilities in Wales. The accreditation has been developed by Swim Wales in close partnership with Welsh Triathlon and is recognised by Welsh Government, Sport Wales and AWWSG as the pinnacle of safe aquatic facility standards in Wales. SAFE Cymru is helping us promote and progress open water swimming safely. Swim Wales’ world class standard will provide the appropriate resources and standards which are needed to ensure safe participation in Wales.

Please note open water swimming is only permitted at Llandegfedd Lake during designated lifeguard-assisted sessions (see Safety First below).

Discounts for open water swimming sessions may be available for members of local swimming clubs in some circumstances. Check with your local swimming club for details.

In addition to regular organised sessions, we will be running events in partnership with Swim Wales. Our partnership will ensure all events are delivered to approved standards. We also hope to soon become an official Open Water Swimming Centre of Excellence. All confirmed events details can be found on our What’s on Page.

How To Book

Sessions will be tailored to clubs, groups and individuals who want to have a go at this hugely popular activity. We are also working on some events in partnership with Swim Wales, so watch this big, blue space! To check eligibility contact or click the button below.

Safety First

We would remind you that unauthorised swimming at any of our reservoirs is prohibited and is extremely dangerous. Our open water swimming sessions are regulated under the close supervision of our fully-trained team. They only take place in strictly designated areas of the reservoir away from hidden machinery during pre-booked organised sessions.

The dangers of unauthorised swimming in reservoirs include

Automatic equipment located under the surface of the water, which can sometimes operate without obvious warning

Very cold and deep water that can cause even strong swimmers to find themselves in difficulty

Most reservoirs are in remote locations, with little or no mobile phone reception, so the chance of rescue is greatly reduced

Other Highlights

There’s no greater thrill than skimming across the surface of the water. If you fancy trying a sport that gives you a whole body workout, then windsurfing’s for you.

Lakeside Cafe

Our Visitor Centre, designed by award winning architects, contains a stylish café and balcony with panoramic views of the lake and water-based activities. It is definitely one of the best views in Wales to enjoy with your cuppa.

Equipment Hire

We have a huge range of high quality equipment for you to hire, from stand up paddle boards (SUP) to canoes and sit on single, double and triple kayaks.
